MMFC:Lists/External authorities

From Manual - MMFC. Medieval Manuscripts in Flemish Collections

1 Introduction

MMFC uses a number of external authority databases. These provide information on the named entities referred to in the description of the manuscripts. By default external authorities provide the standard forms of the names used in the MMFC database. Only in cases when no relevant external authority file provides a suitable authority record from which the name can be taken, will a MMFC cataloguer have to decide on a standard name form. Through the links to the external authorities the MMFC database is also embedded in a Linked Open Data environment. This means that it will be sufficient to include only very minimal information about the named entities in the MMFC database, as users will be able to find more complementary information in these external sources.

There are five types of named entities used in the MMFC database:

  1. Peronal names
  2. Corporate names
  3. Work titles
  4. Location names

Named entities only refer to historical names. Contemporary persons or geographical names are not linked to authority records.

The following lists show the external authorities used by MMFC, with a short introduction on each of these external authorities and the deep link mask used to add the permalinks.
